Balearic Islands

The Balearic islands are made up of Majorca, Menorca and Ibiza. There is also a much smaller island of Formentera which is much less developed. All have very similar climate typical of the med. Extremely popular with families. Majorca, Menorca and Ibiza particulalry have somethign for everyone

Majorca

Main resorts in the North are Alcudia, Sa Coma, Pollensa, whilst in the South, Palma Nova, Magaluf, Santa Ponsa and Palma Bay reign. Another key resort is Cala D'or on the east coast. Palma is very popular for city breaks especially since easyjet and other low cost airlines started to frequent. Great for families, most resorts cater for your every need with an adundance of restaurants of most nationalities, English pubs, Irish bars and fish and chips! of course for the real Spain, you can still find a nice 'tapas' bar / restaurant in most resorts. The beaches are superb but packed in Jul / Aug. It's a year round destination and a firn favourite for many.

Menorca

Much more tranquil than it's more established counterpart Majorca. Menorca caters well for families and it's resorts are much smaller. In fact the island itself is much smaller. Cala n Forcat on the west coast is probably the largest resort with a wealth of bars / restaurants. For shopping however, there is really only on place and that's the capital of Ciudadella. Most other resorts fringe the southern coast - Cala Galdana is a picture perfect resort, whilst Son Bou is one of the smaller resorts. Other resorts include Cala n Blanes, Cala n Porter, Binibequer, Cala n Bosch, Arenal D'en Castell and Punta Prima.

Ibiza

Arguably the livliest and youngest congregate here. Ibiza town - picture postcard setting, great shops, and a base for many young party goers. San Antonio is the heart of the action and the party beat, home to Cafe Mambo, Savannahs, Eden and probably the main hub for nights out to Amnesia, Pacha, and Manumission club nights. San Antonio Bay just around the bay, is a little quieter in comparison but still has it's fair share of small clubs. A good selection of family and adult hotels, lots to see and do. Other resorts that have more of the spanish spirit include San Miguel, Santa Eulalia, Cala Llonga.

Mainland Spain

The mainland of Spain has many diverse places of interest and a number of large cosmopolitain towns and cities that attract visitors worldwide. The main cities are Madrid and Barcelona with some impressive architectural and historically important monuments. Barcelona is a huge attraction due to it's coastal location and proximity to several key European visitor beach destinations. The main beach resorts are grouped into Costa Del Sol, Costa Blanca, Costa Almeria, Costa Dorada each having several resorts within. Benidorm is probably the largest and most established and resembles the New York skyline with it's high rise beach lined apartment blocks and high British population. You don't have to go far off the beaten track to find the true Spain though and this is true of all the main resorts.

Portugal

Portugal has superb beach resorts, breathtaking coastlines and a fantastic landscape covered in olive groves and vineyards. Life is very laid back in Portugal, perhaps more so than it's Spanish counterpart with its traditional festivals. Life is simple, good food, music, wine and its all about enjoying life. As with most mediterranean resort, the peak time when the beaches are busy is Jul - Aug. A yearound resort although smehwat quieter in the winter due to it's slightly cooler Atlantic proximity.

Tunisia

Tunisia is draped in history old and new. From the Roman hot springs at Hamman Mellegue to the set for Star Wars (Matmata - for the Cantina Cafe and underground trogladyte cave scenes), it's lanscapes are truly breathtaking. From the Roman ruins of Carthage and El-Jem to the north coast beaches or the beaches of Jerba Island. The high season, from Jun to Aug, expect the markets and museums to be packed with foreign visitors. This is when the coastal towns are busiest. It's also when some superb festivals in old Roman sites occur

The best times to visit is between mid-March and mid-May when the days are warm. Nov is the best time for visiting the Saharan southern edge- where expeditions into the desert are possible. Festivals inb the saharan town of Douz take place at ths tme also.
